The program sprouted from Italian Chef, Massimo Bottura, along with David Hertz of Brazil, who founded a group that helps people in need by teaching them to cook.
The initiative isn’t just about rescuing food, but opening our eyes to world’s global food crisis. According to the Food and Agricultural Organizations of the UN, up to one third of is spoiled or thrown away before it is consumed.

For his project to take off, Bottura first had to convince the mayor of Rio to provide an empty lot. He then continued on to raise $250,000. Even though donors were generous, they still ran over budget and are working to raise $190,000.
While they may still require more funds to continue operating, Bottura says his aim is to also show people just how many meals can be produced to feed the hungry, from that which we consider “garbageâ€.
