It was June 2016 when a text message arrived on Rachael Sylvester’s phone. It talked about a litter of young puppies – seven of them! – who needed rescuing in South Africa. Rachael runs Sidewalk Specials, a unique rescue organization that takes the adoption out of the shelter environment with adoption days at Cape Town markets and a strong social media presence, so she’s used to texts like this.
The owner of the litter agreed to send over the puppies, but not their mother. Rachael figured it couldn’t be that bad. She was quite wrong; the young fur balls were in a bad state. They had fleas, ticks, worms, and were weak and hungry. To make matters worse, they were missing their mother a lot. Rachael knew that if the pups were in this condition, the mother might be, too. She knew a rescue was in order.
The original owner of the puppies eventually agreed to give them the mother. She hadn’t stood up in two days and was severely malnourished, with vets giving her a 50/50 chance of survival. But the strong pup pulled through, and was surprised with her babies! Their heartwarming reunion was a much-awaited one.

Now, the pups live in a foster home, and five of the puppies have been adopted and brought into new families!
