In 1959, Chinese couple Zhou Yu’ai and Du Yuanfa married in bliss, it seemed they had their whole world ahead of them. Five months after the couple was married, Du was away working at his job in the coal mine. He received a letter, informing him that Zhou had contracted a rare illness, and at the age of only 20, she was completely paralyzed, with no hope of recovery.
Du immediately left his job and returned home to Zhou. In light of the fact that Zhou lost the ability to have children, many people suggested Du annul the marriage and move forward with his life. Du refused. He remained true to his vows, till death do us part.
